Wensleydales last trip of the season to York RI proved to be an exciting game which could have gone either way. Unfortunately Dale paid for a poor 1st half spell where RI ran in a couple of soft tries to go 27 - 10 up at half time. Centre Scott Hunter kept his team in the game with a strong charge to the line, he was well supported by hard working second row Dave Scrivin who picked up and scored. Scott converted and kicked a penalty. Number 8 Tom Lawson led by example putting in some big hits against the home teams back row that included ex Dale player Ewan Metcalfe.
The whole team stepped up in the 2nd half, going through the phases and producing some good rugby. Scrum half Paul Smith found some space to run and fed winger George Pearson sprinting around the cover to score. Smithy then put Laws into space to crash over. Scott converted both and kicked a nice penalty on the hour as Dale took the lead 27 - 26.
Having turned things around all the momentum was with the visitors until 3 penalties given away in quick succession ended up with Scriv in the bin. RIs fullback slotted a drop goal and converted a try to put his side 9 points clear. Dale were then penned in their own 22 for the last few minutes as RI calmly played the game out.
Great effort guys, a few lessons learnt.
Just one game to go at home to Halifax this Saturday in the rearranged game. Lets hope the bus makes it this time.
