Former Wessex RFC player "Matt Hopper" has been selected for the England Saxons to face the Irish Wolfhounds at Exeters "Sandy Park"

Matt Hopper (Harlequins) continues his remarkable rise after being called into the England Saxons squad training to face the O2 Ireland Wolfhounds at Sandy Park, Exeter, on Saturday (5pm).

Centre Hopper, who was born in the city, is one of five new players named in the 25-man group.

Hopper’s call-up comes after just 11 first-team games for Harlequins following his spells in the RFU Championship at Plymouth Albion and Cornish Pirates. He returns to Exeter where he learned the game at St.Thomas based Wessex.

“He’s done well every time I’ve seen him and really deserves his chance,” said England Saxons coach Jon Callard.

The Saxons assemble at Woodbury Park in Devon today (Monday 23rd January 2012) and the side to face the Irish Wolfhounds is due to be named on Thursday, January 26.

As President this is the best news the club has ever had. Our Chairman and Coaches have the honour of playing alongside Matt when he was a young man learning his trade at Wessex RFC. This is a very proud moment for the Coaches, Committee, Club, Players, Members Supporters, Sadie and Mark at the Royal Oak, and those no longer with us. This proves that junior rugby is alive and well in Exeter and alive and well at Wessex RFC. Be very proud today "Semper Audax" Now if Matt plays he will not be the first international to have played for Wessex as Paul Gooding once played for Jersey v Guernsey in the inter island cup - but he will be our first England player. Be very proud - I am!
