Dorking Undo The Vikings at First Hurdle in National Shield
Westcombe Park Vikings' first forray into the National competition was sadly a short lived affair as Dorking run home as winners.
In what proved to be a hard fought abd closer encounter than the end scoreline would suggest, the Vikings held out well against a well drilled, strong and extremely fit Dorking side who ultimately powered their way to victory.
First blood went the way of the visitors in the 1ts half with a well worked try that was duly converted, buy not too long afterwards, Josh Penney at 10 strode over to equal the score and at half time there was all to play for at just 7 a piece.
Wih the slope in our favour, we would have had good reason to feel reasonably confident in this finely balanced game but the slope for whatever reason, offered little solace along the way as the precision and pressure from the furst half, eluded the Vikings for pretty much all the half.
It took another 10 minutes for Dorking to get their second score from a messy pass back inside the try zone that simply wasnt cleared in time before Dorking charged down and got a lucky bounce and a simple plop down for 5 points.
Not long afterwards, a wayward lineout saw the ball bounce to the grateful arms of the Dorking 10 and with rapid hands deplyed the ball to their speedy wing who strode home almost unchallenged. Two tries from two errors on our part and a rapidly dwindling clock was a mountain too high and with a final penalty kick, Dorking saw to it that they would be the side progressing to the next round.
The challenge was there but sadly on this occasion, the Vikings so often the winners in the face of adversity, simply didn't have the power in the tank to take it all the way.
