Defending champions Westgate start season with a win
On a sunny afternoon the Champions began their defence of the title by entertaining newly promoted Holme.
On an excellent and well prepared wicket, run scoring was hampered as boundaries were at a premium on an outfield still sodden after the many hours of rain. Craig Buchanan (30) looked in good form and with Dylan Conroy (18) took the score into the forties. Carl Weiss then got on top of the batting side producing an impressive spell of 17 - 7 - 27 - 5 with the scoreboard stumbling to 79 for 6. Skipper Andy Hill (33 n.o.) held firm with assistance from Jack Huntington (13) and Peter Wilson (8n.o.) to take the final total to 124 - 7.
After Mary's superb teas had been devoured, the returning Peter Wilson got a wicket with his first delivery in a miserly spell of 7 - 4 - 4 - 1. A wicket for Hill followed by a run - out created by Sam Conroy made the board read a sorry 16 for 3 off 11 overs. Resistance then followed from Lee Barnes (13), Andrew Cottam (10) and Simon Shipperd (17) pushing the score into the forties. The introduction into the attack of a second returnee - Danny Wilkinson - then saw a swift finish to proceedings as a devastating spell of quick, straight and full bowling brought him a spell of 5 wickets (4 clean bowled) for 0 runs in 10 balls at one stage and a final analysis of 4 - 1 - 4 - 5 and a Fantasy Cricket score of 88 points. Holme fell to 64a.o. in the 25th over and Westgate claimed the maximum return of 15 points.
