Westgate narrowly miss out on 15 points despite Buchanan heroics
Westgate got a winning draw in a very close game against Carnforth today.
In-form opener Craig Buchanan starred for the hosts with an impressive 81 not out but unfortunately this wasn't enough for Westgate to take all 15 points in what was an important game.
Captain Andy Hill won the toss and elected to bat in overcast conditions at Cross Hill Park.
The hosts had a decent start until Garry Tattersall (7) was out LBW by Stan Rich (3-36) in the tenth over.
Hill (2) fell soon after - being caught by wicket keeper Bradley Hoyle off the bowling of Jack Thompson (2-62). Andreas Arestidou (13) then provided some stability putting on 25 runs with Buchanan until he hit it straight to Robert Horsfall at square leg to give Alex Benson (2-32) his first wicket.
Sam Frith (7) then fell cheaply before Dylan Conroy (19) put on an impressive 51 runs with the ever-present Buchanan before being caught by Dan Dixon to give Rich his second wicket.
Danny Wilkinson then fell for just four runs, before Khan Puffett (14) put on a valuable 23 runs with Buchanan with some quick running in-between the stumps before his stumping. Jack Huntington (4*) joined Buchanan in the penultimate over, and the pair ran well to take the score to a very respectable 161-7 from 45 overs.
Carnforth had a poor start to their innings as key player Ryan Nelson (2) was run out by Sam Frith due to a mix-up with fellow opening batsman Wayne Tomlinson (18).
Chris Parry (12) later fell victim to the bowling of Dylan Conroy (2-33) in the seventh over as did Bradley Hoyle (13) six overs later as the score stood at 49-3. Opener Tomlinson was then caught by Puffett off the bowling of Andy Nisbet (1-20) in the next over.
Dixon (12) and Adam Hornby (58*) then put on a valuable 43 runs for the next wicket before the former was bowled by Danny Wilkinson (3-25) and Tom Parkinson (0) went in the next over LBW by Andy Hill (2-40).
A further 34 runs was made between Benson (19) and Hornby to take the visitors to 131-7, meaning they needed 31 runs to win from the last ten overs.
Two more wickets followed with Thompson (3) and Rich (0) falling victim to Wilkinson's bowling. This left Carnforth needing 14 runs to win from the final three overs.
Tight bowling from Wilkinson and Hill meant that the visitors needed six to win from the last over, but they only managed to make four. All fielders were on the boundary in what was a tense finish, and they prevented Hornby and Horsfall (7*) from snatching 15 points by the skin of their teeth.
