WEEKLY ROUNDUP: Mixed week for both senior and junior sides

Westgate had a mixed week as they won three out of seven games this week.

1st XI

The first team faced Heysham on both Friday and Saturday at Cross Hill Park.

On Friday, they clashed in a T20 game and Westgate won by a comfortable 32 runs.

Heysham won the toss and put the hosts in to bat, and they scored 130-7. Captain Andy Hill top scored with 40 with Heysham's Sam Calverley taking 3-24.

The visitors never really looked like reaching the target as they were constantly behind the required run rate.

Aidan Bannister (34) was the visitors' top scorer as they reached just 98-7 as Hill (3-14) and Peter Wilson (3-19) starred with the ball for the hosts.

On Saturday in the league, Heysham won by one-wicket in what was a high scoring game.

Westgate batted first and posted 210-5 with Andreas Arestidou top scoring with 69 runs. Sam Calverley was Heysham's top wicket taker with figures of 3-65.

In reply, Heysham worked really hard to reach the target with three balls remaining. Andy Powers starred with the bat scoring 69 runs, while Westgate's Peter Wilson took impressive figures of 4-57.

2nd XI

The second team travelled to face Heysham's second string on Saturday and suffered a three-wicket defeat, extending their run without a win to seven games.

Westgate batted first and were all out for 145 despite a good start which saw them 84 without loss at one point.

They had a big collapse however which saw the following six wickets go for just 20 runs.

The innings was rescued however by 13-year-olds Rory Briggs (26) and Joel Frith (12*) who took the score to a more respectable total.

Captain Dave Hannigan top scored with 50 runs, while Heysham's Harry Wallbank took 4-37.

Heysham reached the target in 38 overs, with another youngster in 13-year-old Freddie Whatmuff starring with 35 runs. Sam Conroy took his best bowling figures of the season with 3-38.

U16s

The U16s suffered a narrow three-wicket defeat away at Shireshead B on Wednesday.

Westgate batted first and posted a score of 84-8 from 20 overs. J.Bradshaw (14*) top scored for the visitors, while S.Hayward (13*) and Olivia Bradshaw (10) also reached double figures.

For Shireshead, E.Collinson (2-4), E.Dean (2-4), J.Butlin (2-12) all impressed with the ball.

Shireshead reached the target with just one ball remaining. Number three batsman E.Haig (30*) top scored and was forced to retire, as he reached the limit.

Jim Craig was Westgate's top wicket taker, with impressive figures of 3-7.

U13s

Westgate under 13s eased to a comfortable 32-run win against Lancaster at Cross Hill Park.

Westgate batted first and got off to a good start thanks to Sam Hayward (13) and Joe Bradshaw (14). Then came retirees Rory Briggs (28*) and under 11 Nathan Allen (25*). Late runs from Yusef Dalal (9n.o) and Matthew Bradshaw (6n.o) helped Westgate to an impressive 121-4 off their 20 overs.

After 10 overs Lancaster were out of the game at 26-2 before a big over of 21 from J Lord (25n.o) gave them a slight glimmer of hope.

Westgate again used 10 bowlers with Rory Briggs (1-0), Marcus Palamountain (1-22), Matthew Crowe (1-14) and Matthew Bradshaw (2-6) all taking wickets along with debutant Lawson Carr (1-3). Lancaster finished on 89-6.

U11s

The under 11 hard ball team travelled to Netherfield on Tuesday and fell to an eight-run defeat.

Westgate batted first and scored 269 in their 20 overs. The highest partnership came at the end when Nathan Allen and Jack Edwards put on 20.

While Netherfield just pipped the visitors, there were positives to take for Westgate as every bowler were in the wickets.

Harry Winder (2), Matthew Bradshaw (1), Marcus Palamountain (1), Jack Liptrot (1) and Jack Edwards (1) all took wickets.

On Sunday, the soft ball team travelled to Lancaster and won by three runs.

The home team batted first making 274 with good contributions all the way through the batting line-up.

Freddie Able topped the bowling with three victims including a caught and bowled, Jake Moore (2) and Lawson Carr (2) were the other wicket-takers.

Westgate fielded enthusiastically with Nathan Allen taking two catches to lead the way.

Partnerships of 18 by Jack Liptrot and Rayaan Hussain and 17 by Himanshu Manjare and Mohammed Hussain kept the visitors in the match.

The final Westgate pair of Carr and Allen steered the visitors past the Lancaster total, securing victory with a stand of 27 in a final score of 277.

Next week

Next Saturday the first team travel to Warton, while the seconds hosts Bolton-le-Sands.

In the junior section, the U16s face neighbours Bare at Powderhouse Lane on Wednesday, before the U11 hard ball side visit Shireshead on Friday and the soft ball side host Shireshead on Sunday.
