Young Westgate side led by Hughesie defeat Ingleton
You CAN win things with kids
Alan Hansen obviously wasn't referring to a Westgate A when he famously said "you can't win things with kids". Holidays, work and first team call ups left Westgate's second string with an average age of just 20 including debuts for Joel Frith and Dan Legg both just 13 years old.
The afternoon started badly for the hosts when they lost the toss and were asked to bat first with opener Sid Gani still an hour away due to traffic problems. The usually reliable Chris Carter (0) was bowled third ball of the day by the impressive J Preston (12-5-13-4) and shortly after Robbie Green (4) was dismissed the same way with the score on just 4. Young all rounder Sam Conroy (5) and Alex Parrott (0) also suffered the same fate and at 27-4 in the 19th over it looked like being a disastrous afternoon. Fortunately stand in skipper David Hughes (56) and the very impressive 15 year old S Islam (4) put on 41 in 15 overs for the 5th wicket. Hughes was eventually bowled in the 38th over by name sake J Hughes (12-1-34-4) with the score on a respectable 75. The delayed S Gani (5 no) helped guide the score to 80 and give Westgate's bowlers something to defend.
That defence started well with the sheer pace and accuracy of Sam Conroy (7-1-13-4) proving too much for Ingleton's top order as he bowled birthday boy G Kellet (10), C Fleming (5) and the dangerous J Hughes (0) with an absolute jaffa. He was ably supported by Mr Consistent S Gani (12-2-24-3) and the visitors were struggling at 32 for 7 by the end of the 14th over. The introduction of Alex Parrott (4-1-6-2) proved to be too much for the tail and despite a spirited last stand of 14 the ever vocal D Whitfield (8) was run out by Conroy with the score on just 51.
This was a truly remarkable victory from a very young and inexperienced bunch of lads who all stepped up to the plate and did themselves and the club proud.
