Weak Westgate side suffer heavy defeat to Division 2 high-flyers
Hughesie back to his usual form..
Westgate A suffered a heavy seven-wicket defeat to league leaders Ambleside yesterday afternoon.
Stand-in captain for the second week running, David Hughes, won the toss and decided to bat first despite having another weakened team due to holidays and first team call ups. Making just their first and second appearances of the season, openers Craig Atkinson (4) and Rob Shillitoe (0) showed their lack of game time and both fell to O Wileman (9-5-7-3) who along with his brother B Wileman (8-4-9-2) reduced their hosts to 7 for 5. Youngsters A Parrott (4) and top scorer S Islam (9) battled hard to push the score 19 in the 17th over. Islam, who faced 67 balls in his innings, continued his partnership building with veteran D Wright (3), making just his second appearance of the season, as they lasted another 10 overs. The runs then flowed as 15 year old J Phelan (7) and 13 year old J Frith (3) managed to push the score to a barely respectable 37 off 30 overs before being all out.
The visitors didn't want to hang around all afternoon despite the efforts of R Shillitoe (5-2-7-2) who bowled Ambleside's skipper with an unplayable delivery. All rounder S Islam then bowled an arrogant D Douglas who tried a switch hit scoop only to lose his middle stump. In only his second game D Legg belied his thirteen years with a good over of spin showing the potential character coming through Westgate's junior ranks. Ambleside passed their target in just the 11th over to remain league leaders and favourites to progress back into the first division.
Westgate A now sit in ninth place, but 37 points above Netherfield 3s who occupy 10th.
