All-round team effort too much for Ingleton
In a riveting first game of the season, Westgate's second string hosted a dangerous Ingleton side on a cold blustery afternoon at Cross Hill Park.

The hosts batted first and got off to a superb start with Chris Carter (24) and skipper Dave Hannigan (26) putting on 42 in just 11 overs before Carter somehow managed to rabona the ball onto his stumps! With the score on a healthy 57 off just 18 overs the expectations of a big score were rising but some tight bowling from R France (12-3-25-1) and L Gorst (12-4-24-2) forced some conservative batting from veteran Sid Gani (22) and young pup Jacob Vaughan (14). The next 19 overs had only brought another 34 runs but this patience enabled a great crescendo of a finish as David Stephenson (26 off 33) and all rounder Sam Conroy (9no) took the score to a very respectable 135-6 at the finish with G Kellet (11-2-41-3) cleaning up Stephenson with the penultimate delivery.
In reply, the visitors took a dogged approach as D McGonigal (11 from 53 balls) and J Reid (8 from 34 balls) struggled to score against the electrifying bowling of "Man Legs" Sam Conroy (12-4-21-1) and scintillating control of "The Wizard" Sid Gani (12-8-11-2). The tight bowling did not let up as Westgate's youth came to the fore with vice-captain Jacob Vaughan (9-5-5-3) leading from the front with a spectacular display of accuracy and variation. After being 35-7 off just 24 overs the game looked to be all over but an obdurate M Dawson (15 from 65 balls) wanted to stay out in the cold and Ingleton looked as though they may manage to force a thrilling finish. It was left to debutant bowlers 19 year old Robbie Green (5-2-9-1) who put in a composed and efficient spell and Joe Phelan (2.1-1-14-2), who celebrated his 17th birthday last Friday, to wrap up a thrilling victory as Phelan dismantled Dawson's stumps in the 44th over to leave their guests 67 runs short.
