Late push not enough to score 15 points as dropped catches cost Westgate
Westgate picked up a winning draw against Kirkby Lonsdale on Saturday, and they will feel disappointed not to get all 15 points.
By Jacob Vaughan
On another warm day at Cross Hill Park, Westgate captain Dave Hannigan had no doubts about batting first.
After the early loss of Chris Carter (4), Hannigan joined Sam Frith at the crease and the pair looked to get Westgate going. They put on 50 for the second wicket before Frith (30) fell just before drinks to A. Metcalfe (12-1-30-1). Sam Conroy (2) became Watson's (12-1-39-3) first victim, which brought Sid Gani (15) to the crease. He added 38 with Hannigan, before also falling to Watson. Hannigan then went on to reach his 50 and Dakshina De Silva (9) added some quick runs before an excellent slip catch from S. Williams removed him. Hannigan (53) then fell on the penultimate ball to give Watson his 3rd of the game and leave Westgate 130-6.
After teas, it looked from the outset that Kirkby were not going to achieve their target. Despite this, they were keen not to give their wicket away. This was shown by opener Fred Witt, who faced 42 balls, and only played one shot which brought him his 2 runs. Harvey Williams (30) batted patiently, punishing the bad ball and was joined by Williams Snr (11) which helped them to 45-1 at drinks.
Just after the break, S Gani (12-4-25-3) dismissed Williams Snr and De Silva (6-1-16-1) removed Williams Jnr. Gani also took the wicket of Parkinson (2) to leave Kirkby 64-4 but then the next eight overs passed without much hope for Westgate. With eight overs remaining, youngsters Conroy and Vaughan returned to the attack. Vaughan (10-2-26-2) dismissed Cooper (14) before bowling Watson (2) two overs later. Conroy (11-6-10-2) bowled Persie (2) and Troughton (0) in the 43rd over to give Westgate a glimmer of hope, but Metcalfe (22no) and Royce (4no) stuck in until the end to secure two points for the visitors as they scored 109-8.
