Stockdale fifty proves costly for Westgate as Penrith win by 44 runs
An impressive 59 runs from Penrith's Chris Stockdale earned his side a 44-run win at Cross Hill Park today.
Westgate captain Dave Hannigan won the toss and elected to bowl despite good weather and a good looking wicket.
The hosts got an early breakthrough just three overs in, when Ben Vickers (0) was caught by Chris Carter off the bowling of Sam Conroy (1-42).
Penrith did steady the ship however, and it wasn't until the second over of first-change bowler Jacob Vaughan (4-40) when Westgate got another wicket. Vaughan removed Ollie Langley (17) caught and bowled, and then removed Jamie Parker (4) LBW in his third over.
Danny Wilkinson (1-22) got his only wicket soon after drinks when Dan Moreland (11) edged to Carter.
Opener Dev Berger (47) and Stockdale (59) then put on a crucial 81 runs to take the score to a respectable 146-5 when Berger was bowled by Vaughan in the 41st over.
Stockdale remained at the crease encouraging quick running with James Ellis (5), before the former was caught by Conroy off the bowling of Abdul Rehman (1-53).
The only other wicket was that of Ellis, caught by Chairman Nigel Parkinson off Vaughan's bowling in the penultimate over. Charlie Hansford (4*) and Nathan Lee (5*) remained at the crease to take the visitors to a total of 162-7 from 45 overs.
In reply, Westgate had a relatively steady start with openers Wilkinson (10) and Carter (41) putting on 20 runs together before Wilkinson was caught by keeper Gareth Airey off the bowling of Moreland (2-28).
Captain David Hannigan (11) came in and put on 32 runs with Carter before he also fell victim to Moreland's bowling.
The wicket of vice-captain Jacob Vaughan (2) fell shortly afterwards, and then Abdul Rehman (5) departed six overs later as Parker (4-36) claimed his second wicket.
Carter then departed following an impressive 41 runs, and the wickets of Conroy (8) and Rory Briggs (0) fell just before drinks.
Veteran Parkinson (2) was out shortly after drinks, and Joel Frith (0) was bowled after just three balls.
James Main (0*) came to the crease and remained defiant with Phil Webster (29). They put on 14 runs together to delay Penrith's inevitable win but helping Westgate to a valuable bonus point.
