HISTORY OF WESTGATE REDOUBT A.R.L.F.C.
It all started with rugby union back in 1967 but quickly turned to league, at that time the team were called Westgate Common W.M.C. and played on the Empire Stores ground but unfortunately the team folded in1972.
Paul Newman and Pete Davies got together in 1979 and reformed the team, still known as the Westgate Common W.M.C. , and played on what was known as The Stamp. It was at this time that the first committee was formed with the members being: John Barker, Pete Davies, Charlie Malcolm, Paul Newman, Don Saville, Ronnie Speight, Mal Stanhope, Jack Thompson, Phil Ward, Jim Wild and Paul Wood…six months later Gregg Brook came on board.
We’ve named the first committee so it’s only right that we name the first team as of 1979: Malcolm Barnsley, Mancell Barnsley, Tony Clarke, Kev Costello, Pete Davies, Mick Hartley, Paul Newman, Mark O’Brian, Dave Peace, Keith Sherwood, Ronnie Speight, Jack Thompaon, Paul Thompson, Phil Ward, Stu Whittaker and Paul Wood. Ronnie Speight, Malcolm Barnsley and Mancel Barnsley were among the teams’ first coaches.
In the 1986-87 season the team had a change of name and a change of venue. Moving to the Westgate Redoubt pub to use as the teams’ home we adopted the name with which the world of amateur rugby league, in this area at least, have come to know us by.
After more than a decade playing from the pub the team moved to another venue. 1998 saw Westgate Redoubt A.R.L.F.C. move to the Snapethorpe school annex where they were self sufficient with their own clubhouse and changing rooms, also playing on a pitch just a short walk from the clubhouse.
2008 saw our last change to date. After 10 years at Snapethorpe under the name of Westgate Redoubt, both for the name of the club and the teams, we re-branded to...The Westgate Sports & Social Club (for the club itself) and for the teams we changes to the Westgate Wolves.
We are sure there will be further changes in our future wgich in time will be out history.
