Wests walloped away from home

Early on Saturday morning I took the dog for a walk, and I was urinated on by another dog. Unfortunately this was to be the highlight of my day as Wests travelled to North Shields to take on a new look Percy Park.

Wests kicked off up the bank and the ball was knocked on by Percy Park, WL sensing an early opportunity gathered the ball and attacked the Park line, unfortunately a loose pass was knocked on; some confusion in defence saw the Percy Park centre race away from his own 22 for a converted try. 7-0

Leeds did threaten a score when a Lewis Bromley broke and was tackled just short of the try line. WL were penalised for a double movement however and the chance went begging.

Another score followed when a penalty was awarded for going off the feet at the ruck, and Park attacked the fringes with their 'Exeter' call and eventually crossed for another converted try. 14-0

WL eventually got on the score board when Dale Breakwell dispatched a routine penalty in front of the posts. 14-3. This was to conclude our scoring for the day.

WL conceded another converted try when pushed over at scrum time from their own 5m line. 21-3.

We now had last play of the first half and a penalty which we kicked to the corner, the lineout was, again, missed and PP gathered the ball. However rather than clear the ball and take half time they sensed the chance of another score and attacked from their own 22 to score in the corner following some poor tackle attempts.

An early Percy Park penalty put them further ahead 29-3

Another converted try was to follow when Duane Smith was sent to the bin for a high tackle, a catch and drive was repelled, but this did not stop them crossing under the posts. 36-3

Wests still tried to get a score and the returning Ben Waddington went close, sending Danny Booth away in the left corner, but the move was called back as the referee (correctly) adjudged the pass to be forwards.

Percy Park were much better on the day, dominating scrum and lineout and fully deserved the bonus point win. Improvement is required from WL as we head into next weeks game against Malton & Norton.

Photos of the game can be seen here if anyone wants to relive it.
