Coaches Report from Jezza
Another solid four quarter effort from the Ealing Emu Lads against a stubborn and physical Reading side. Preparations were slightly hampered with a lack of an opposition in sight until minutes before kick off. Then across Barn Elms a line of blue and white Kangeroos appeared! Not sure what they were doing but Reading didn’t seem ready for an Emu side hard at the footy and quick with possession. Within 7 minutes, Ealing led by 3 goals to zip. Solid contributers in the middle were Tundra and Scudds, With Matho starting strong in the forward line and Shane crumbing at his feet. Quarter time came with a 4 goal lead to the Emus.
The second and third quarters were a tight struggle. Both teams cancelled each other out with a mixture of hard work but also poor disposal. Reading’s tough approach to the contest resulted in a couple of injuries to key talls Dave T and Matho. Dave T would come back in the last quarter only to attack an opponent head first and finish the game on the sidelines. Both teams could only muster a goal each in the middle two quarters with Ealing holding that 4 goal lead at three quarter time.
Tiredness was always going to be a factor going into the last quarter, and it was superior Emu fitness and effort namely Paddy, Jays and Capt Whibbles leading by example. Special mention to Matty Ross who had to ruck the entire match after Dave Ts early injury, never gave up and was a key match winner with 2 goals. Emus managed to win the final quarter 3 goals to 1 to run out comfortable 40 point winners. Special mention to all lads who wore the Emu jumper on the day, playing 14/15 a side on such a large ground was always going to be hard work, but reward through victory made even sweeter against a side we owed a pasting.
That was the entree, now for this weeks match against Wandsworth for the main course! Get down to training this week lads!
