It was perfect conditions for rugby at Skew fields , a good turnout by the local supporters and casual observers , but in the end a bad result for the home side.
Gwernyfed started strongly , playing a type of rugby that belied their league form of 4 wins and 9 losses. The home side suffered a blow when Casey Mahoney left the field with a shoulder injury after just 6 minutes which will see him out of action for a couple of games , Anthony Armstrong doing well to continue to the end of the game after sustaining a nasty injury to his ear minutes after Casey's .A converted try by the visitors was answered with a Deri King penalty and the teams turned around at half time with the score 3 - 7 to Gwernyfed.
The second half promised much , West Mon had the slope and looked if they could just get enough ball to get the backs going then they had a real chance of an upset. In the end the forwards were out muscled in the scrum at key times and the line out. West Mon's best chance slipped away when they lost a scrum 15 metres from the visitors line after some fine work by forwards and backs to gain field position. Again a game where with ball in hand West Mon's pack and backs would have tested the visitors , any decent ball tended to be kicked away. Even when this option was well executed the home side struggled to control and secure possession.
In the end a decent performance by West Mon but a late interception try adding 7 points to the winning margin which flattered the final scoreline.
Special mention to Captain DJ Winter who led by example throughout.
Final score West Mon 3 - Gwernyfed 19
no disgrace against a side that contained several who must have been used to playing a higher level. Great effort by the pack particularly in scrums and at breakdown. tackling was superb.
