Westoe run in winners against Blaydon

by Ian Etchells

Westoe Port of Tyne sponsored under 12’s played host to Blaydon RFC under 12’s on Sunday

This was the Bulldogs first home match since their impressive win away to Stockton and the Shieldsmen once again had victory in their sights.

The teams were evenly match at the start with some excellent rucking from both sets of forwards. Blaydon who had a significantly larger pack put Westoe under pressure 10 minutes in but the Bulldogs defence held strong until some sloppy missed tackles lead to a Blaydon scrum 5 metres out, to which Blaydon duly went over to score the 1st try of the match to lead 0 – 7.

Westoe undeterred won the ball from the restart and some good running from centres Kyran Pattinson and Johnny Guy who passed to winger Tyler Yates who carried the ball over the opposition 22 metre line were scrumhalf Mackay took the ball from the base of the ruck to power over for Westoe 1st try; converted by Pascoe to level the score 7 – 7.

In a to and fro game Blaydon came straight back from the restart with their pack driving up the field only to drop the ball on the try line again due to superb Westoe defence.

The second half started well for the Bulldogs with a line out in the opposition 22 being won by Westoe and Kyran Pattinson receiving the ball and making a weaving run through the Blaydon defence to score; converted by Pascoe to put the score at 14 – 7.

Again Blaydon came back with some excellent forward pressure leading to a scrum 5 metres from the Westoe try line. Westoe won the ball however the kick to clear the line was charged down by Blaydon to score a lucky try and take the score to 14 – 14.

Westoe didn’t lose their spirit and took the game straight back at Blaydon with a superb individual try by Fly half Callum Pascoe(19 – 14). Westoe still kept on the pressure with their forwards which lead to an interception by Etchells who of loaded the ball to Pascoe who ran over for the final try of the game which he converted to bring the final score to 26 – 14.

The Bulldogs were once more reminded by their coaches that consistency is the name of the game and this standard has to be maintained to step up to the next level.
