WESTOE legend David Haswell is hoping his passion for the club rubs off on his players as they look to drag themselves away from the foot of the table

Haswell, who moved into the coaching team during the summer, has been part of the set-up at Wood Terrace from an early age, playing in the minis and juniors before graduating to the senior outfit. And while he admits that his playing days are now probably behind him, he still has the desire to help the club grow and improve.

He said: “My body can’t cope with playing week in, week out, my shoulder is just shot. But I want the best for this club, it’s my club, the one I have grown up with and I want to try and instil some of the passion I have for Westoe into these boys and that’s why I’m helping hopefully to improve their skills and keep us in this league.

“The boys are buying into what we are doing, it just takes time. What we’re trying to do is get the boys always giving 110% and playing for the shirt and more times than not, that is what they’ve given. It’s just sometimes we come up against teams that are bigger and a bit more savvy at this level. But if the boys continue to put the effort in I think the results will follow.”

Westoe have won just two games so far this year and find themselves second from bottom of the table, 11 points adrift from Morley one place above them. And while Haswell knows there is a lot of work ahead, he believes they can still get themselves out of trouble.

He said: “Winning becomes a habit and so does losing. I know it hurts me deeply and it takes me a while to recover from it and I’m sure it is the same for the boys. But we have to pick the boys up on a Tuesday at training and we had a really good session this week. The boys were listening and reacting to what we were doing so that’s great. We now just need to implement it under the stresses of a game on a Saturday.

“We’re going through a transition phase and remember they’re just young lads so we need to bring them in and give them the experience. And if you keep working and keep listening to what myself, Carlo and Haydn are working towards, it will come to fruition.

“It’s like a baptism of fire for some of these young lads who are getting thrown into senior rugby and it’s kind of sink or swim. There is no bedding-in period, it’s like you are it and this is what we are doing. And I think for that they all need to take a lot of credit for that kind of stuff. They are coming in and they are giving it their all. They are improving their skill level and the ability to play at that level week-on-week.

“The last three or four games have been a bit of an anomaly in the sense that we’ve played some of the best teams in the league away from home. So the real test, the line in the sand is at home this week against what is a good team, but perhaps not one of the top three teams. So we’ll see how they get on with that.”

Their opponents this week are Rossendale who after failing to win any of their opening four games have gone on an impressive run of seven straight victories, which has seen them rise up to fourth in the table. Haswell though is just concentrating on his own team.

He said: “Last week we played really well, it was just isolated missed tackles because we were defending for such long periods of time, that once a team like Sale get behind you, they are really clinical. I think one thing we have to work on is our attack. We expend a lot of energy in defence but when we come to attack the boys need to have that sense of energy to be able to put our attack and what we want to do into action. We need to be more positive and more energized in attack.”

Kick off at Wood Terrace is at 2.15pm.
