Lookers-sponsored South Shields Westoe succumbed to first league defeat in nine weeks.

In a side that contained ten changes it was always going to be a difficult day at Stockton's new ground in Teesside.

Despite the quality of players coming into the team, it was clear that the new combinations and styles would cause a few initial issues.

Looking shaky in defence Westoe came under immediate pressure from the Teesiders; themselves on an impressive run of victories . A simple backline move saw their winger take the space and feed inside for the first of Stockton's tries. Two minutes later the lead was increased to 8 after a simple penalty in front of the posts.

The score remained the same until Westoe received their first yellow card of the day and Stockton used the man advantage well, and combined with some shoddy tackling, scored two more converted tries.

Down by 22 points, Westoe secured their first points with an Arnold penalty. With seconds to play in the half, a strong scrum saw scrum-half Pascoe feed Arnold, who in turn put a flat pass out to make-shift winger Paul Evans, who forced his way into the corner. Half-time 22-8

Both teams back to full strength, this was the perfect opportunity for Westoe to claw back the lead; however a series of poor tackling again saw the home side claim two more converted tries within ten minutes of the half, taking the score to 36-8. A further penalty took the lead to 39-8 with only twenty minutes to play.

Westoe finally decided to turn on the power and the last quarter saw a much more familiar style to their play. Following some brutal driving runs from Connolly and Elliott, Westoe's scrum-half Connor Pascoe, took a quick tap penalty to feed Raymie Elliott who crashed over the line, converted by Arnold.

A further yellow card for Stockton gave Westoe the numerical advantage and with their confidence returning they turned up the heat and pushed Stockton hard.

A solo effort from Arnold resulted in a 50m run through the scrambling defence bringing the score to 39-20, followed quickly by a driving maul touched down by Ryan Lamb, Westoe's fourth of the day, securing at least the bonus point. 39-25

The last ten minutes found the Westoe pack dominating their opponents, who consistently managed to pull down driving mauls without attracting the attention of the referee. After a huge driving maul of 50m was yet again taken down, Westoe managed to release their back-line, with Luke Moffett touching down in the corner to take the score to 39-30.

A conversion would have secured the second bonus point, but the kicking plaudits on the day went to Stockton and with five tries each, the final score was 39-30 to the home side.

Westoe should learn from the day and realise that even with changes to the starting side, that they have the capability and strength to beat all opponents in this league and that key tackles must be made throughout the eighty minutes.

Westoe remain second in the league.
