The West Nautical sponsored Westoe Development team cemented their place at the top of league.

With the game being cast into doubt throughout the week with Tynedale lacking in players and unable to turn out a side for the opening two weeks of the season confirmation was provided on Thursday that the game was to go ahead and so it did.

On a glorious afternoon in Northumberland, Westoe travelled to what they knew would be one of the hardest games of the season coming against a very strong outfit in Tynedale who have been at the top of the table for the past few years and giving Westoe some heavy defeats on the way.

However, this saturday was different, with Westoe turning up with the same core of players from last weekends victory and the addition of the ever reliable Chris Laycock into the back line provided depth and quality to an already buoyant team who have not conceded more than 3 tries in any game this season and including pre season fixtures. The game began in what has now become typical fashion for the West Nautical sponsored team, flying out the blocks and putting the opposition under a lot of pressure from the outset. However, due to indiscipline Westoe were forced to defend for periods of the opening encounters on their own line but thankfully the defence stood strong. with confidence and positivity shining throughout the team the first score going to Westoe was inevitable. A darting break from the young star Dom Howe provided the ball on a plate for Laycock to beat the last man and dive in the corner with Man of the Match Jake Arnold converting. With the heat and frantic speed the game was being played at Westoe were forced into making an early couple of changes and with the bench came more strength. James Robinson and Jon Gregg powering over from a quick taps and scoring before half time with Arnold converting one. Another try was scored by Lewis Wilson after Tynedale did not commit to the line out with Wilson catching the ball turning and scoring only for the referee to be slightly ill placed and did not see the grounding therefore disallowing the try. With Westoe buoyed and half time approaching a lack of urgency and a bit of complacency provided the easiest of opportunities for Tynedale to get onto the board with a chip over the defence for the centre to collect his own kick off the post and score under the sticks for an easy conversion.

With halftime came a couple more changes and with these brought a different game plan for Westoe, with Tynedale not making a change. With this though cam risks and with risks Tynedale began to feed on these mistakes and scored 2 tires either side of a Jack Weddell burst to score next to the posts. With the game drawing to a close and Westoe needing the fifth try to collect what would be a third set of bonus points in 3 weeks up stood Derek Worthington who powered his was a metre short of the line and with a full arm extension managed to place the ball on the line, thanks to great positioning by the referee in this case the try was awarded and converted by Arnold finish the game at 17-33 to Westoe.

The development team play at Woods Terrace on Saturday against Horden and Peterlee Seconds at 3pm.
