Director of Rugby Andy Howells was ecstatic after the game, he said: “From one to eighteen they all did their bit today.
“The boys just put their bodies on the line today. It was something we’ve been asking for, and we’ve struggled as the heads have gone down very early in other games, but today once we were on top we stayed on top and that was the difference.”
The South Shields sponsored JML side took the lead early on when Rossendale’s pack gave up too many penalties on their tryline which resulted in a penalty try.
From that moment on the home side never looked back and scored two further tries before the half time interval, through young standoff Luke Moffett and centre James Clark.
Howells was full of praise for the fly-half after the game: “Moffett came in there today, and I thought he had a superb game at ten.”
The second half saw Westoe cross the whitewash three more times, Andrew Lawson scored the bonus point try before Ben Roberts and Gary Andrews wrapped up the win.
Rossendale spent 30 minutes of the game with only 14 men on the field as they were given three yellow cards for repeated infringements, and Westoe took advantage of each of these ten minute periods by scoring in each one.
Howells had previously spoke of getting a further two wins before Christmas and this result leaves them with a real chance of achieving that.
He said after the game on Saturday: “We’ve got one and we’ve got another two to go.
“I think we’ve got to take the positives and there was loads of positives in that game today for us.”
Despite the attacking flair shown by Westoe it was the much improved defence that gave the young side (the average age is only 21) the building blocks for a mightily impressive win.
Particularly noticeable was their decision making over when to challenge for turnovers and when to stand back and wait for another chance.
Howells said: “[That decision making] is what the coaches have been trying to put in place for weeks and weeks and weeks.
“Today that defence at times was solid as a rock, the boys have bought into it.”
The win gives Westoe a bit more breathing space over bottom club Beverley, but they still find themselves cut adrift of the sides above them, and with work to do if they are to move into the safety of mid-table.
