Old Match Reports 8 of 15

8. Pocklington v WPB 13/11/2004

Intro : This week can hardly be classed as one from the archives as it's the match report from the Cup match at Pocklington (www.pocklingtonrufc.co.uk) which was only two weeks ago (6th Nov 04). However, it's always good to get the view from the opposition ! It also makes interesting reading as we are playing them this weekend ( 20th Nov 04)

Pocklington 12 - 10 West Park Bramhope

Pocklington went into the hat for the fourth round of the Powergen Vase when they came through a nail-biting finale to beat West Park Bramhope 12-10. With ten minutes to go, Pock looked home and dry when they scored their second try of the match to lead by 12 points. But they then took their foot off the pedal and did their utmost to self-destruct.

They let West Park in for two slack tries, though luckily the kicker, ex-Great Britain rugby league hooker Jimmy Lowes, who was playing in the centre, missed both conversions. There were seven minutes of injury time and Pocklington continued their lost ways, trying to run out of defence and turning the ball over. West Park swapped kickers but still missed a penalty. They twice drove over the line but were prevented from getting the ball down, then had a drop goal attempt in front of the posts only to see Pock's Kevin Bowling fly up to charge it down and save the day.

Up until the closing stages, Pocklington had given a hard-working, disciplined display which looked to have given them a comfortable victory. They absorbed early pressure before moving to the other end where Bowling's hanging kick was dropped by the defence and home full-back Henry Mitchell swooped to touch down, teenager Nick Bennett converting.

Pock spent the first half-hour of the second half in West Park territory, gradually turning up the pressure. Prompted well by stand-in scrum-half Rob Jackson, they came close in both corners before a lineout drive was finished off with a try for lock Stewart Rowley.

That looked to make the game safe until Pock let West Park back into it and give their supporters a nervous time waiting for the final whistle.
