The local rivals went head to head in a thrilling game of rugby, with WPL coming out on top

The Sycamore Girls got off to a flying start following a neat side step from Captain Emma Lowe to burst through a very tough and physical Castleford defence to score under the sticks. Shortly after Emma Parkinson was next to show her pace with a superb sprint down the wing something Usain Bolt would have been proud of, to score out wide. The third try quickly followed from Hebe Shepherd to put the WPL girls 15-0 ahead.

WPL girls seemed to lose concentration, allowing Castleford back into the game. With two superb tries from Kayleigh Waller (Castleford No.9) both of which she converted herself showing some fantastic talent leaving the scores close at 14-15 as we left the first quarter.

The remainder of the game was one-way traffic with a plethora of tries for the girls in black and gold. From Cara Cookland’s break down the wing running 75 metres of the pitch, to Jemima Merrin’s faultless diving offload whilst being in mid-tackle to Hebe Shepherd to crash over the line for her second try of the game in addition to Jemima’s own two tries.

Exceptional performance from the WPL forwards against a much larger Castleford Pack, although they struggled in the scrums it did little to prevent tries from Rosin Ramage and Rachel Brown. A break towards the line from Bryony Field put West Park in a very strong attacking position for the remainder of that phase of play.

With three conversions from Grace White and three drop goals from Emma Lowe the WPL girls’ had their kicking boots on.

All in all a thoroughly successful outing for the Sycamore girls with a final score of 33-72 away at Willowbridge Lane.
