In a taut contest West Park Warriors edged past previously unbeaten Ilkley 2nds by 14 v 17 in this 2nd round Aire Wharfe Cup tie at Stacks Field.

Always destined to be a close encounter, a 60 metre Harry Ibe interception try converted by Andy Cromack equalised an early converted try by the home forwards.

Fullback Cromack landed a penalty five minutes later then goaled from the touchline to add the extras after a well worked Tom Milner try set up by No 8 Paul Minns and fly half Marcus Barnett.

The home forwards rumbled over again just before halftime, the conversion narrowing the deficit to three points.

Defences dominated a tense and scoreless second half but West Park held on to record their first win of the season over Ilkley in three attempts, having lost there by two points just a couple of weeks ago.

For West Park Paul Barretto had an outstanding game at 2nd row, ably assisted by partner Nick Hartley while Joe Baker worked tirelessly in the back row. However, this was a victory earned by the entire squad who will now look forward to the semi final with optimism.

The semi final opponents will be Roundhegians 2nds, venue The Sycamores, kick off 7-30pm on Wednesday 16th April.
