West Park St Helens (28) vs (24) Cleckheaton by Eric Briers
Park get their first win !!
West Park have played better and lost in previous games but gave a gritty display to gain their first league points and move off the bottom of North 1.
Visitors Cleckheaton took an early lead with a try by full back Ross Hayden which he converted himself.
A strong break by Park's South African centre,George Tossel, was carried on by the pack for Warren Hunt to mark his debut with a try,the conversion wide.An outside break by flyhalf Ryan de la Harpe was finished well from halfway and converted for a 12-7 lead.Cleck took full advantage of Park flanker,James Burrows, being in the sinbin to rattle in two trys and a conversion and lead 19-12 at the interval.
Disaster struck after the restart when Park lost de la Harpe with a serious facial injury ,the Yorkshiremen scoring a try while Park's back line was being reorganised. However Park harassed the Cleck pack on the restart and replacement prop,Fijian Ratu Balafirara, collected and scored a try again unconverted as Park struggled to find a kicker in de la Harpe's absence.A strong run by second row Serge Edlyn and good ruck ball saw Neil Best over in the corner with deficit now just two points.
After a fine try saving tackle by Ali McLeod the home pack took control and as Cleck prop Aiden Andrew was sinbinned for stamping,Park found a goalkicker in George Tossel who landed two penaltys as the Cleck forwards infringed under pressure.
Next week Park again cross the Pennines for a tough encounter at Sheffield Tigers
