A final try towards the end
Once again Park’s slow start to the game caught them out, a worrying trend which gifted the visitors an early try, to which they added another some 15 minutes later. A final try towards the end of the half proved to be too great a margin to overcome for the home side to secure a victory.
An up and under from half way caught Park’s defence all at sea and allowed the visitors to gather the ball for stand off Leadbetter to score unopposed. Though the home side had a good share of possession they could not turn their pressure into points, and conceded a further try as Widnes moved the ball across field and aided by some poor defensive tackling added to their score, neither try however being converted.
West Park were in disarray and indeed disbelief in not opening their score, a fact added to as the visitor’s scrum half Hatton picked up a ball from the base of the scrum and found ample room down the blind side to cross wide out, again the try not being converted.
The home side started the second half with greater purpose, and with their scrum being dominant, winning several strikes against the head, continuing possession eventually brought them a score as a fine break by No 8 Cozens developed into a maul from which prop Riley forced his way over, Rosney converting magnificently from the touchline. Although Park continued to enjoy good possession they often resorted to unnecessary and poorly executed kicking , but nonetheless it was from a speculative kick by winger Kerfoot that they added to their score, as opposite winger Littler gathered to force his way over in the corner, Rosney’s attempted conversion unluckily hitting the post.
Despite several changes to their personnel, Park were unable to add to their score, and thus had to make do with a consolation single league point, which could and should have been more.
Park have no fixture next week, and the following Saturday , Oct 21st, travel to near neighbours LSH to renew
