NEWS: England Show West Yorkshire Grit

All at Wetherby Athletic would like to say well done on a great effort by England in the recent UEFA Regions Cup.

For those of you who didn’t know, the England squad was represented from players of the West Yorkshire League and they put up a great show beating Prahova Muntenia (Romania) 2-1 and drawing 1-1 against Vojvodina (Serbia).

This meant that the Three Lions needed a win to progress against Southern Region (Russia). However, despite peppering the Russian defence, they played out a still very creditable 2-2 draw, which meant Russia progressed.

Whilst no Wetherby Athletic player made the final squad, we are still very proud of the efforts of the players who represented our league and would like to echo the statement of the West Riding County FA who said: “Despite their disappointment at not qualifying this England team has been a credit to the country and the West Yorkshire League, consistently demonstrating, resilience, tactical awareness and a level of skill that is remarkable for players drawn from the 11th tier of English football.”
