Numbers for both sides were great – 11 aside match with a couple of subs each. The game couldn’t have started any better. Oli F. organised his team well and Jay, Danny and Conor ran well to gain good territory. Oli F made some lovely little moves and popped the ball out wide which unfortunately led to a Wetherby knock on – good effort – liked the ‘vision’.
It was now time for Stanningley to show what they had…..some big forwards but not as big as Heworth. Wetherby threw the sink at them – every man in the tackle ‘literally’. Great though – turn over ball. Alex then got a fab drive up the park but loose ball had Mackenzie tidying up. Harry had a great game today and set his stall out with a lovely strong run. This enabled Oli F to pass a good ball out to Conor who showed his magic and got the first try of the game – well done Conor!
Wetherby defended well at the next 6 but usually is the case of scoring a try – the opposition get one back immediately. A try a piece.
Jay was the first in to drive the ball at the bulldogs attacking 6. Good ground made then on by Oli F who had another strong run. Alex whipped a ball out to Conor, which thankfully bounced backwards off his chest - much to the delight of the skipping Danny and James out on the wing! Sam cleared up and Oli F scooted to dummy his way over for a fabulous individual try. Well done Oli F. – Bunny fever now even more prevalent as not only Danny and James were skipping and jumping but video evidence clearly shows Alex hopping for joy! Must take after his dad!!!
William was first in with tackles at the next defensive 6. Great determination to keep Stanningley out but to no avail as they scored.
The Bulldogs slightly rattled gave possession straight back to the home side. Oli S, Sam, Jay and James tackled brilliantly pushing them into touch, which wasn’t given. On quick ball they scored out wide against the run of the play. Unlucky boys.
Wetherby attacked really well at the next 6 with Mackenzie, Dan, Harry and James just unable to score. Good defence by Stanningley.
Max, Connor, Lewis, Oli S. led the charge to keep Stanningley near their own try line. The Bulldogs did well to keep them from running up the park. Crunching tackles from Jay, Conor and Oli F. It was the recent ‘quiet’ poacher Danny who had a sniff, managed to intercept a pass, no magic feet as he was dumped to the ground but still turnover ball.
Alex bullocked his way up the turf followed by Mackenzie and Will who had a great drive – well done Will – brilliant run! Unfortunately another handling error gave the possession back to Stanningley.
With possession passing between both teams and both teams attacking and defending well, the half time whistle loomed. Conor made some good territory for Oli F to jink away and float a pass out to James who scored a great try in the corner! Well done James and the team – it was well deserved!
After half time Wetherby appeared to take control of the game. Lewis, Max and Sam defended well. Alex and Conor stopped their big forwards in their tracks. Harry, Oli S & F, Will, Dan and James all put the runs in and Mackenzie and Jay both got on the score sheet. It looked like Wetherby were to take a well earned win away from Stanningley. Which to be fair, the parents response after Kenz and Jays last try’s, of hilarity and cheering, it not only seemed like we’d won the lottery but got the game in the bag!!! With the score 5-3 in the bulldogs favour, Wetherby were running, passing and tackling well. However, Stanningley, having only just been demoted down from Div one, had other ideas!! They scored 5 tries in the second half – not really sure how or why. Taking nothing away from Stanningley, they did very well – well done to Stanningley but Wetherby at times just got caught napping – which clearly cannot be done in this division without punishment (not just from the coach but by the score line too!).
Mackenzie was able to score the final try of the day, which left the final score to be 8 – 6 in favour to Stanningley. Well done boys – there’s lots to work on. Collectively the team is getting stronger and going in the right direction. Some good forward drives today with much more passing of the ball. It’s a big step up into division 2 but you are finding your feet well! Keep going!!!
