It’s a close call – but U9s loose to a well-drilled Heworth team
The U9s had a full side out today – all eager to beat a strong Heworth side.
Danny won the toss to give Wetherby 1st play of the ball. Harry as acting half passed the ball onto Oli F who started the game how he meant to carry on – strong hard and direct – Well done Oli F. Conor took an early knock with a high ball that left Jay to gain some great ground for the Bulldogs. Oli F with linking play floated a lovely ball out to Fergie. Were it not for some great Heworth defence it would have been a great first try of the match! Kenz was stopped short on the line – 5th and last went onto Conor who was left looking for a hole to drive through – to no avail. Great defence from Heworth – turnover ball.
Heworth under pressure from Wetherby knocked on, which gave possession immediately back to Wetherby. Close to the line it looked a sure quick try for dancing feet Fergie but again he was tackled well. Kenz darted over to the other side of the pitch to try to penetrate the defensive line – again he was held out. Oli F, Conor, Kenz, Oli S and Fergie all kept the ball alive, desperately trying to get past the Heworth wall. They couldn’t get through – great effort boys from both sides.
Again on turnover ball Heworth knocked on and gave possession straight back to the Bulldogs. The home crowd, shouting from the sidelines willed the Bulldogs to score. Fergie made a great run again down the wing doing well not to be bullied into touch. Danny got hold of the ball sold an awesome dummy just under the sticks – to the encouraging shouts of Chris ‘the stealth (sporting a great fat suit) Whitewick – but he got stopped short of the line.
Will put in a good tackle on Heworths first real possession of the game. They passed it out to their huge unit who ploughed straight over the top of Oli F! Very brave Oli F well done. It took Mackenzie, Conor and Alex to stop the big number 8. Oli F not to be outdone smashed the next two runners well in their tracks. Alex then pumped, got in a great cover tackle to the delight of not only himself but also daddy stealth too! – Don’t worry Chris we can’t hear you shouting at all when you’re stood down the opposite end of the pitch!
Heworth now looking very sharp pass a long ball out wide where Oli S makes a crucial tackle helped by Oli F and Fergie. Heworth’s little acting half then dummied his way over for the first try of the match completely against the play of the game. Unlucky boys.
Lewis plays the ball onto Jay who makes a brilliant run straight through the oppositions forwards. Conor also makes some good yards. Danny then runs a lovely line to pass Mackenzie the ball, who sets Oli F up well who again sends a fantastic floating ball out wide to Fergie who scores a cracking try for the Bulldogs! Brilliant well done!
Heworth then lead on to attack very well from all angles of the pitch. Will and Alex put in some crunching tackles along with Conor, Fergie and Oli F. Oli S pushed the play well out on to the wing which enabled Kenz, Lewis, Dan and Alex to push Heworth into touch.
Bulldogs then knocked on and Heworth immediately punished the mistake with a try – again unlucky boys.
Conor then got his angry head on and drove up the field like a kid possessed! Brilliant drive – loving the sound affects! Sam then made a great break up the pitch away from touch giving Jay great field position. Harry then whipped a pass out to Oli F who again looked as though he were to score a try only to be held out from some great Heworth defence. Sam and Jay then had a great spell of some textbook tackling. The Bulldogs collectively tackled really well – realising that the only way to stop the big Heworth forwards was around the legs.
Wetherby had a great attacking set where Fergie, Mackenzie, Sam and Jay made the hard yards up the pitch, both Olis had lovely hands to gain great ground but Heworth held fast – turnover ball. The Bulldogs tackled well again as a team. Conor and Jay muscling the opposition to the ground. A few of the bigger players required extra weight and hands from Will, Max, Lewis and Danny to stop the Heworth forwards. Great team effort. The Heworth big number 8 was just unstoppable 5 meters from the try line. Try to Heworth.
Harry tidied up very well at the next attacking set – quick reactions got Wetherby the possession back, which allowed Jay and then Conor to gain some good territory. Similar to earlier on in the match, it looked as though Oli Fs floating pass to James was to be a sure try, but the Heworth number 8 ripped the ball from the Bulldogs giving Heworth possession and denying Wetherby a try. Unlucky!
It took a whole team effort to stop Heworth from scoring another try. Great tackles boys but Fergie’s has to mentioned from the shear spiderman ability of launching himself on top of the number 1’s back and clinging on for life to eventually bring him down! Brilliant. Kenz, Jay and Will then made crucial tackle to keep the nig number 8 from scoring. Half time whistle and Heworth were ahead 5 tries to 1 up.
In the second half Wetherby did brilliantly well. Collectively they tackled well and ran the ball in hard. The boys were putting into practice some of the moves and off loads they have been learning in training. Most importantly their heads never dropped. Some excellent scramble defence from Wetherby at times, which kept Heworth from scoring. Mackenzie almost scored two tries in the second half had it not been for a toe in touch. Max had some good drives along with Lewis putting in some great crunching tackles. Sam, Will, Danny, Mackenzie and Oli S all ran well and made some great yards. Jay, Alex, Oli F and Conor were great in defence. Harry superb at acting half and lighting feet Fergie did brilliant to score 2 tries.
The final score put Heworth winning 6 tries to 2 (the second half was a try a piece). It was a great effort boys – one to be proud of. The score line didn’t reflect the closeness of the match.
