Battling Marlins overcome by hardworking Wetherby
A match closer than the score suggests
Wetherby Under 14s had to keep pushing and defending to stay on top in a hard fought battle with the Marlins.
First try went to our No3 - running out wide after continued pressure from Wetherby. Tommy M did a great job converting the kick from out wide and into the sunlight to make it 6-0 in the first 5 minutes.
There was sustained pressure from Milford who pushed hard to try and break through but after a great Wetherby defence and 5 tackles the Marlins kicked the ball and it was caught neatly by Callum. He ran for a good 30 yards, then a deft pass to Jo saw him zig-zag up the field towards the goalposts, with 10 metres left and Milford bearing down on him Jo passed it quickly to Tom Fl who zipped past another 2 players then with only a few yards left fed it to Tom Francis to score the try - A GREAT TEAM EFFORT to make it 10-0. Tommy M was kicking the tight angles very well but for some strange reason this punt in front of the posts just went wide so it stayed 10-0. Unlucky
The next try was a great solo effort, with Jonny running three quarters of the pitch, all the way he was chased down by the Marlins. The Marlin fish is one of the fastest in the water (getting up to 68mph) and Milford must have got close to that speed chasing Jonny ! Fair play to them for not just sitting back and letting him sprint off. They were so close as well, for a good ten yards they almost had their hands on his shirt to pull him back. In fact with 5 yards to go Jonny must have known he was close to being tackled, so turned slightly to hand off the chasing Marlin and ran the ball in for an amazing try. Great work to make it 14-0 and give Tommy a kick which he converted to make it 16-0
Milford Marlins coach knew he had to keep his players going, and after a stern word and a rallying call to his team they pulled out a try and their No. 5 was the last recipient of some useful passing which gave them a try which wasn't converted. That made the score 16-4 and the crowd could still feel it could go either way and the next try might make all the difference to how this game might end..
...and it was Elliot who got the next ! A brilliant run, never giving in or letting anyone slow him down. That brought up the score to 20-4
and then the tries starting rolling in. After some great defence on our line for what seemed like an age we brought in a few tries in quick succession. With (man of the match) Callum scoring the last two tries and Tommy converting one of them to leave the score at 30-4.
There were so many players who played well today- particularly when defending. But special mention to George for his solid tackling - he was like a brick wall out there !
Parents voted man of the match was Callum Smith
Coaches man of the match was Thomas R for his hard work all day
It's been great to have a big squad to choose from, something we didn't have the luxury of last year. That meant we had the ability to sub players and even rest some. So special thanks to the wider team for all their efforts in training and for travelling to support the players on the field.
It's another game against the Marlins next week, fingers crossed for another good day at the office.
