Half a century against battling Slaithwaite
Points for the win mean Bulldogs Under 14s are TOP OF THE LEAGUE
A great win against Slaithwaite, pronounced Slawit (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slaithwaite)
Watching the Under 14s is sometimes like a visit to Alton Towers;
- There are some rides you think you're going to enjoy but don't (the loss against Kings Cross was definitely like that)
- There are the big roller coasters where you are nervous all the time you're waiting, you get excited and feel the tension during it and then feel the buzz afterwards (the win against East Leeds)
- The match against Slaithwaite was like a queue at the candy floss stand. You know you have to do it and it is worth it in the end.
So we got the win and we worked hard for it. But it definitely didn’t feel like the excitement of East Leeds. Taking nothing away from the match – we had some great flashes of good rugby.
Right from the kick off Wetherby seemed to know they were in for the win. The Slaithwaite kick off was deemed to be offside and the referee blew his whistle for the first (but definitely not the last!) time. Isaac ran with the ball. Jay took the ball for a v e r y long run and then the offload back to Isaac for the score
Next up was Dev with a great run using his long legs and ability to sprint like a cheetah –he ran down the wing to bring up 8-0
Later in the match we had 2 offside calls against us, they got all the way to our touchline and pushed and pushed but couldn’t get through. Our defence really buckled down and when they spilled the ball Jonny picked it up and ran the full length to make it 20-0. Great try.
The Wetherby show was going on at the same time as our match so there were new spectators, stalls and music blaring out from the speakers…and just as Tom F got the ball and ran through their defence the Thunderbirds theme tune was ringing out from the amps ! He ran for 60meters and grounded the ball under the sticks to make it 24-0 as the crowd sang along to the tune laughing and smiling. Tom Fl made the conversion and that made it 26-0
There were many more tries from George, Isaac and Callum Wright - who did really well from a tackle and with some quick thinking took the ball from the ground and over the line. Great to see Callum score when we normally rely on his passing skills so much.
Slaithwaite took a penalty to put 2 on the board and very late in the match kept going to score a try and convert it.
And that was the end of the match. 50-8 in the end.
It made a nice change to stay out in the summer (no sun though!) and enjoy a barbecue straight after the match.
I couldn’t finish this report without saying well done to Mick for playing during the day too – if anyone has any photos send them to me at firstname.lastname@example.org and I’ll get them put up here on the website (and maybe enlarged onto posters!)
