U12's - Old Wimbledonians vs Weybridge Vandals

U12's - Old Wimbledonians vs Weybrdige Vandals

After a few weeks of iced pitches and postponed training the Vandals returned to rugby and winning ways.

The sunshine helped with the early start at Old Wimbledonians and it also helped bring out the best of the team, great numbers also bolstered the team’s presence on and off the field (well done parents).

After a gentle warm up, the teams took to the field for their first of 2 matches. From the off, the Vandals were keen to make their mark and the forwards dominated the first phase of play, several rolling mauls from set moves helped the V’s march up the field. The backs were on form and maintained their attacking line which helped to drive the ball forward into the oppositions 22. The sustained pressure from the forwards saw the V’s take the first points.

Again from the restart the Vandals put Old Wimbledonians under pressure, the forwards rucked, counter rucked, mauled and pushed their way forward up the pitch, line-outs were won and the set plays secured the driving mauls. The pressure of the pack continued to pay off as we took the 2nd score.

After the break the restart saw the game play open up and the opposition started to counter the Vandals advances, some minor mistakes from each side saw some soft penalties being given away. However, the Vandals regrouped and found themselves pushing the opposition up the field with a fast rolling maul, again the pressure took its toll and the Vandals went over the try to take another try.

Final Score 26 – 0 to The Vandals.

The second game saw several changes and a new pack came into play along with a fresh set of backs. The game kicked off and the new players found themselves in the thick of the action, several missed tackles saw the opposition eek up the field, this gave Old Wimbledonians the confidence they needed and they went over to take the first try.

After the oppositions try, the Vandals heads did not go down and they gathered themselves quickly. The team started to secure the ball & each phase of play helped the team control the game, some quick pick and go moves gave the Vandals the breaks they needed, these breaks were supported by some quick hands and the driving momentum enabled the team to go over the try line to level the score.

By now teams were getting tired and mistakes crept in from both sides, after a few knock ons, players off side etc the Vandals managed to capitalise on a break and the team set off with the ball in hand only to be stopped short of the try line, the ball popped out of a maul and the Vandals went over the try line for the second score. Old Wimbledonians were not giving up and continued to push for more points, their backs fed the ball well and their wingers made some good breaks down the side lines but the Vandals defence managed to keep them just outside of the danger zone... After some small handling errors the oppo secured a scrum 10 metres out, however the confident pack counterred the shove and secured the ball which was swiftly kicked into touch.

Final Score 14 – 7 to The Vandals.

Another great day for the U12’s, everyone got on the pitch, the parents support was immense, the set plays worked well and the player changes did not disrupt the flow of the game. Excellent work all round, some small things to work on but well done team, your efforts in training are doing you credit.

Only 5 sleeps until tour..... See you all in Dorset..
