Weybridge Vandals welcomed the following local primary schools to the annual Elmbridge Schools Tag Rugby competition on March 21st 2012:
.
- Bell Farm
- Cleves
- Esher Church
- Hurst Park
- St. Charles Borromeo
- St. James
- St. Lawrence
The competition is open to mixed teams of girls and boys from years 4 and 5, with the exception of boys who are registered with clubs. So for many it is a first taste of competitive rugby, and a great introduction to the sport!
The format consisted of two mini leagues followed by plate and cup finals, for the league runners-up and winners respectively.
The participants were observed by Vandals coaches and a number of players will be invited to come to attend some additional training sessions. A squad will then be selected to represent Elmbridge in the Surrey Youth Games - a local Olympics for kids!
There were many closely fought matches with lots of great tries being scored. The quality of the play increased as players settled in to their matches. All the players, teachers, helpers and parents should be proud of the effort put in to making this an enjoyable sporting occasion.
The overall result was that St James pipped St Charles in a hotly contested cup final, with the winners receiving the trophy from the Mayor.
Thank you to the tournament referees and line persons who were all students at Brooklands College in Weybridge for giving up their time to join us, and thanks to Elmbridge for continuing to promote this fantastic competition!
