Weymouth Ladies II 2 - Yeovil & Sherborne IV 1
Weymouth clinch victory in the final few seconds
Weymouth started the game strong and had possession of the ball through the middle of the pitch, with solid play between Issie Gilliver and Annalise Dive passing the ball to each other. Olivia Treadwell made some great runs into the D but the ball wasn’t reaching her; Yeovil’s defence were strong and hit the ball away. The first short corner of the game was awarded to Yeovil, who subsequently scored with a clean strike into goal to take the lead.
Weymouth soon came back with Abi Jackson-Wilding attacking on the left and pushing some balls through to Gilliver but Yeovil intercepted and sent the ball back up the field. Liv Culbreth intercepted well a few times and passed the ball across to Jemma Brunell, who sent it onto Treadwell who made another good run into the D but again Yeovil’s defence was too strong and cleared the danger.
Katie Nineham broke away with the ball up the right wing, beat a couple of Yeovil players and crossed to Gilliver with another attempt to push it through to Treadwell who was waiting in the D, to be beaten by the Yeovil defence yet again.
One break from Yeovil saw their forward and Weymouth’s goal keeper Ellie Goff head to head with a ball heading for goal, but Goff stood her ground and strongly and confidently kicked the ball away. Half time whistle blew with the score 1-0 to Yeovil.
After a fine briefing from Wayne Goff, Weymouth’s coach, the second half of the game started off well with strong possession by Weymouth, with a few strikes on goal from Gilliver but no goals.
Weymouth midfield hit a superb ball into the D where Alice Furness on the right post caught the ball and with some scuffles managed to push the ball into Yeovil’s goal, making the score 1-1.
The second half was a lot stronger than the first and Weymouth settled into the game well in the last quarter and saw strong possession of the ball not giving Yeovil much of a chance to win the ball back. There were excellent interceptions from Weymouth’s defence of Carolyn Schofield, Jenna Bennett and Jo Ray, who very rarely let the ball through to goalie, Goff.
In the last minute of the game, one final break from Weymouth saw endless perseverance from Furness running up the wing with a cross from Bennett to Furness who tapped the ball into the goal in the last 30 seconds of the match for the winner! The final whistle then blew with a fantastic, nail biting 2-1 victory for Weymouth.
