Whitchurch played The Vale in their final indoor league game and were sadly unable to pick up the win the team had been looking for. Hampered by only having 5 players, a quick decision by the coaches meant that Whitchurch were put into bat first.
Gethin and Isaac got things off to a slow start as they found the net hard to find. Whilst not particularly quick, the bowling tidy enough to mean that Whitchurch were restricted to only 8 run from from the opening overs.
After taking a quick leg bye, Isaac was first man to depart as he was bowled for a duck. This brought Harry into bat, who looked a little uneasy and struggled to get bat on ball. At the other end, Gethin was also finding it hard to get going and was eventually dismissed, bowled for four runs.
Joel was next in and fell in the same way as the other two, bowled by a ball that kept low (as it tends to indoor). This meant Whitchurch were struggling with only 27 runs on the board and 1 wicket left.
Enter the man of the night, Louie, who proceeded to take the attack to The Vale bowlers. Working well with Harry, they both managed to find the net whilst also making the most of poor work behind the stumps. Louie was very aggressive on the straight drive, scoring a couple of sixes and a four on his way to an unbeaten 29. Harry was last man out for 8, once again bowled by a low one.
After a quick pause for press photos, Whitchurch were back on the field knowing that being a man short meant they were up against it. Louie opened up but struggled with his line, giving some easy runs. A similar tale played out with Issac and Joel - both unable to trouble the batsman. Gethin bowled an interesting over of spin, using plenty of flight on the ball but as with the others was unable to make the breakthrough. Finally, we saw Harry step up and bowl his first (and I have a feeling that he's hoping last, at least for a while) over. To be fair to him he's kept fairly well all season and his bowling was ok.
This meant that after 5 overs, The Vale were on 52, needing only a further 16 to win. Another loose over from Louie saw 12 runs scored and The Vale picked up the final 4 needed from the start of the 7 over.
All in all, a slightly disappointing game but the odds were stacked against them. As I've mentioned before, the boys should feel proud as they have improved week on week - consider that we went from being rolled for 25 in week 1 to pushing the eventual winners close in week 7.
