Sully batted first and most batsmen struggled on a low, slow pitch. They lost thier wickets at regular intervals - four with the score in the teens, giving Whitchurch high hopes. Lewis Maidment and Harry Jones shared the first eight overs conceeding only 14 runs and taking 3 wickets between them. Adam White and James Cheesman bowled the next eight overs, sharing four wickets between them. Wickets were taken either clean bowled or LBW, all as a result of good line bowling. Three catches were also taken, two by William Milburn, and one by Adam. A cameo of 22 NO from the Sully number 8 helped them to 66, with Will and Harry Sewell mopping up the tail. A great effort in the field considering we only had 10 players.
In their reply, Whitchurch faced some acurate bowling throughout their innings, and struggled to break free. Captain Matthew Delf batted most of the innings for a patient 23 runs. He was well supported by Gwilym Evans, who scored 12 valuable runs, and occupied the crease. However, when they were dismissed the pressure built, with Whitchurch needing 5 off the last over to win. Unfortunately one wicket fell and only three runs were scored leaving Sully the winners by 2 runs.
Everyone involved should be pleased with their contribution. The fielding was great, the bowling was tight and the batting was well paced. Hopfully the positives outway the bitter taste of defeat.
All bodes well for the future of Under 13 and Under 15 cricket at W-HCC, and the U15s edge closer to the divisional final.
