U9s make it six wins from six!!
Another fine set of performances from our youngest players to maintain their 100% record: read the full match report here!
Once again we were blessed with good weather for the second weekend of the U9 cricket season, away at Creigiau on Sunday 13th May. We had three strong sides to play, but confidence was high after a great performance last week. Our first game was against the hosts, Creigiau on a bumpy but pretty dead grass pitch. We were asked to bat first and reached a very high score of 259, with 5 each for Rohan and Sam, but most of the batters were frustrated as there were very few balls that could be played, with 40 of our runs coming in wides and no balls. However, the most important statistic was that we did not lose any wickets. Some of the Whitchurch bowlers also struggled a bit with the pitch but the middle order bowlers did really well, with a wicket maiden for Pippa and a maiden for Rohan, then another wicket maiden for Tom, with a fabulous catch by Sam who did really well to get to a ball moving fast and way to his left. Alfie also took his first wicket and with a final one for Gethin, Creigiau finished on 207.
We’d noticed some big hitting on the other pitch during the first game so we were pleased to play Lisvane on the same bumpy track, as they were keen for revenge after last week’s one run win for W-H. They won the toss and asked us to bat. Gethin hit some nice shots at the top of the order to score 6, but with runs again hard to come by we protected our wickets well and we were pretty pleased to reach 219. In reply, Lisvane got off to a good start but we hit back with two wickets in an over for Pippa and a wicket maiden for Rohan, one of these another fine catch by Gethin. It was really tight going into the last over, with Lisvane needing four to win. They had a good tactic of running for absolutely everything and it looked like it was going to work, before a wicket meant they needed four off the final ball to draw the game. A good driven shot did not reach the boundary up the hill and we got it back to the bowlers end to keep them to a three, so a second win against Lisvane, again by one run. Joshua performed well in his first game of the season, keeping his wicket intact and doing well in the field.
For our last game we went on to the big pitch to play The Vale. They asked to bat first as they had players needing to leave early. Sam took a couple of early wickets as opening bowler and there were good tight overs from Jack, Pippa and especially Rohan who bowled another maiden to finish with no runs conceded in all three games. The Vale finished on 212. In reply Gethin and Iwan got things off to a good start with some good shots as well as dealing with some wild bowling and fielding, followed by Pippa who scored 7. Rohan and Jack faced some frustrating bowlers who were difficult to score off, but they took the score to 229. The Vale’s tactics became clear at the end: they had saved two very good bowlers until last. Tom and Sam faced up to them really well, and although three wickets fell, some good shots and running between the wickets kept the score in our favour, with Whitchurch-Heath finishing on 224.
Another week of superb performances from everyone, with visible improvements in many areas and lots of fun! See you on Friday!
