Two wins and a loss for U9s this week
A day of contrasts with a below par bowling display in the 1st game and the same with batting in the last but a superb all round display in the middle
Our third weekend of the U9 cricket season was away at St Fagans on Sunday 20th May. Although the weather started cool it warmed up later in the morning to provide great conditions for cricket. The first game this week was against Penarth on a fairly good grass pitch. They were waiting for missing players but batted first putting some players in twice to make four pairs, and they reached a pretty high score of 242, with Whitchurch Heath contributing a lot of these with an uncharacteristic 12 wides and 4 no balls and only one wicket taken. However, in reply we protected our wickets well throughout, losing none and after good start provided by Gethin and Jack, most people scored a few runs, including one in his first game for Lucas and with similar numbers of wides and no balls from Penarth we managed to overhaul their score, in the last over, finishing on 247.
A very drilled looking Pentyrch side were our second opponents on the same pitch. Jack won the toss and opted to field first. This was a much more disciplined and typical Whitchurch bowling display, with a lot less extras given away and both wickets taken coming in Pippa’s over including a well held return catch. The last Pentyrch pair hit some nice shots to finish on 229. Whitchurch started well, but coming in in the second pair, Alfie was on fire, scoring 11 including two fours ‘clonked’ away off his legs. Rohan scored 4 to bring the scores level as the last pair went in, and Tom and Sam brought Whitchurch home to a total of 244, with only one wicket lost.
Third game we went over to the main pitch to face St Fagans B. The toss was lost and we were asked to bat, and this time we found it difficult to get the ball off the square early on, with some good fielding from the hosts and only one boundary, again from Alfie. The Whitchurch innings was progressing OK but then we lost five wickets in the second half of the innings, and so ended on a very unfamiliar 198. This was going to take some defending, and to be fair the players made a great effort including only one run conceded in his over by Michael. Two wickets in Iwan’s over including a good catch taken by Tom and a wicket for Tom himself gave us renewed hope each time, but the final St Fagans pair played very well to take their score to 214 and our first loss of the season.
We were never going to win every game, and learning to win and lose with grace is an important part of the game. There were many very good performances amongst the inconsistency this week, with the most pleasing part of the day being the obvious improvements made by several of the young players. See you next week!
