Whitstable U11s Greens played there first match of this rainy summer against Canterbury A, a gloomy cold Sunday morning was brightened up for the early risers.
Whitstable skippered by William Thomas lost the toss and were put into bat, A nervous Ned Smith and Gabe Parker put on 16 runs on in first 4 overs to get the side off to a good start.
Next up Jessica Dack and Joe Clements. Joe having netted with Uncle Stu i was confident of a solid performance from young Joe. Unfortunatly he play all round his first ball and heard the dreaded clatter of timber,
Putting that behind him and forgetting Stu advice went on to add another 3 runs without loss.
Steady accumalation from the last two pairs gave Whitstable a total of 258 to Defend.
Canterburys reply started badly with William Thomas bowling the opener with the first ball of the innings. Steady bowling 3-0-5-0 and a run out by Alice Thompson helped Whitstable restrict the scoring.
Another wicket from Archie Tennant late on meant Canterbury needed 2 off the last ball to win.
Captain Will Thomas bowled a leg stump yorker which the batsmans jabbed down on and Canterbury just scrambled home to tie the game.
An Excellent performance from a rooky Whitstable side with 8 of the 9
players in the first game for the U11s Greens
Yes a fine performance on a very chilly May morning, everyone scored runs and there was some all round excellent fielding and bowling.
For a side who have not only played together before, but have'nt played hard ball cricket full stop, it was a very heartening effort, which i'm sure will give both the girls and boys plenty of confidence for the season ahead.
