Guys you need to read this and take on board these comments as they are written to help you understand what you have to work on and improve to become better players. If you want to talk about any of these things myself, Steve Holness or any of the senior players in the team will gladly help you so just ask!!
Thanks to Clare for Teas, Val for scoring, Grant and Steve for umpiring, Alan Nutten for stepping in after Steve for taking one for the team and we hope the head recovers! (can't imagine any damage there though)!
Many thanks to Grant and Steve Holness for putting in the effort to get us a wicket to play on at Radfall. The wicket was very soft in the morning but with drying conditions so favourable it would have been a very disappointing not to have played.
Well done to all players as we were up against it today with our 9 juniors and 2 seniors against 8 seniors and just 3 juniors. All their batting was done by their adults and amongst them 2 or 3 of their best 1st team batsmen so well bowled Patrick, John and Jack Sargent, Scott and Max (best not say much about the old guys bowling)!!
Fielding?!
You must find time to hit long catches to each other so get together over the summer holidays and get some practice in. I don't expect you to catch them all but I do expect you to get better at this skill because if you don't we will not be able to compete too well.
Walking in? You need to watch the TV and see how the pro's do it. There should be at least 10 paces of walking in each delivery and the last 3 or 4 paces you should really be moving. Dreamy schoolboy, half hearted walking in has to stop right now so let's get this right for next Sunday please.
Talking?! There needs to be more encouragement all the way through and not just by 1 or 2 people. We do not all have to say something each ball but when a guy bowls a bad one he needs encouraging and when he bowls a good one let him know.
Throwing in!
It is better to be a little more loopy with the throw and get it into the keepers gloves. Harder throws at the keeper feet or bouncing in front of him is not acceptable. So practice it and get it right quickly.
Backing up the throws. We need 2 guys to back up the throw whenever possible, even if you are 50 yards away on the boundary and there is a player on the square backing up, come in 20 yards and back up yourself.
Batting.
Well done Scott, Chris and Aaron all had good knocks. Chris and Scott you need to pick up more singles. There were 2 or 3 older guys fielding quite deep in the ring. Learn to play the defensive shots with softer hands so that the ball travels slower into the covers or to mid off and you will have time to run these singles and keep the strike rotating. Talk about which fielders are right or left handed and if you hit the ball in the gaps to their non throwing hand look to get singles here also. Backing up and good clear calling play an important part in this. Once the bowler is in his delivery stride you should be on the move. You need to talk to each other so that both of you are tuned in for looking for singles and you must call loud and clear. Basically you need to be looking for singles rather than waiting for them to arrive. You have to get proactive.
When opening the batting I am happy to see patience for 4 or 5 overs to assess the pace and bounce of the wicket and see if the new ball is swinging or seaming and then you have to get busy looking for singles and pushing for 2's. BUT again I stress that you must really talk to each other every over about where the gaps so that you understand each other.
Still, for all of that we had some good stuff going on out there against a side that was far more experienced and physically stronger so we should be proud of that.
I am not expecting you all to get this right straight away but I do expect you to want to try and improve in these areas and for you to find ways to practice these skills.
Good stuff guys and keep working at your own game.
Chris Dale
