The sun shining and the grass short; a great day for cricket.
Armitage batted first and raced away.Clarke, down from the 1,s with a bad back, didnt hang around.Matt Gilbert and Pete Hillifer were hit all over the ground. Pete had drawn the short straw and was bowling up the hill into the wind but even so had Clarke dropped 3 times. Keith Boden took over from Matt and bowled Max Gibbons for 52 good runs.Derek Gilbert taking over from Pete had no luck; hugh smith took over - Clarke tried to put his first ball in the car park, gave it more height than distance and was caught by Pete on 101.Rich Newman from the top end after Keith bowled tightly and bowled P Bailey for 28.Dominic Bloomfield replaced Hugh and bowled L Elsmore for 28 and got A Clarke LBW on 8. Pete came back on, bowling with the wind, and got J Watkins caught by Steve Rushton on 1 and bowled A Scriven for 2. Armitage declared on 280 for 7 off 39 overs.
Whitt went in in a determined mood facing 51 overs to avoid defeat. Dom and Pete opened playing sensibly; when Dom was out for a duck in the 8th over, the score 15, he had done his job. Adrian Tennant came in and made 8 in 9 overs;Pete stayed in until the 22nd over - he had made 26 and kept us in the game; he was replaced by 14 year old Callum Smith. Adrian was replaced by Rich who made 4,lasting a couple of overs only; he handed over to Keith, bowled by a scuttler for 1 after occupying the crease for 4 overs. Then Steve made 11 lasting 10 overs and the draw looking attainable;Matt then made 8 staying 12 overs.he was replaced by his old man Derek in the 47th over. Callum meanwhile was batting brilliantly - finding the gaps;hitting over the infielders; when the outfielders were brought in he started hitting it over them.He hit the only 6 of the Whitt innings and finally went,on 49, done by change of pace ,a slow dolly-dropper, in the 49th.Hugh and Derek blocked out the last 3 overs for the draw.A losing draw but it felt almost as good as a win! Armitage made 17 points but must have felt robbed they didnt make 24. Whitt 6 points. 137 for 8 in 51 overs. MOM Callum but mention must be made of Pete; opened the batting and stayed in for 22 overs, 2 wickets and 1 very good catch.
Next week Springhill at Home. Well beaten on Saturday, are they weaker than when we played them away? Ditta?
