Warriors edged out by Old Boys
Heartbreaking golden point defeat in Presidents Cup
Wibsey Warriors hopes of a second successive Pennine Presidents Cup Final appearance were dashed on Saturday after a nail-biting 13-12 defeat against Premier Division high-flyers Hunslet Old Boys.
Many were expecting the Leeds based side to be comfortable winners given their current league position, plus after the only previous meeting between the sides back in 2009 resulted in a convincing loss for The Warriors. However a magnificent team effort coupled with one or two superb individual performances saw Wibsey run the home side close throughout the full 115 minutes of play.
After the normal 80 minutes, the scores were level at 10-apiece. Wibsey's tries coming from Ben Cousins and Man of the Match Andy Robinson, with the half-back adding 2 points from the boot.
A further 20 minutes extra time were played with both sides trading penalties, leading to golden point extra-time. The vital score coming after a further 15 minutes play by virtue of a drop-goal for the Old Boys, causing heartbreak for Rob Hustler's men.
Wibsey will now look to bounce back as they return to league action this week, with a trip back to Hunslet to face their rivals in the league.
Despite their 6th position, Wibsey are perilously close to being sucked into a relegation battle, with surrounding clubs only 2 points away. Adding to their points tally this weekend would prove invaluable as they look to maintain their top flight status after an encouraging start.
Elsewhere, Wibsey 'A' were on the receiving end of a 22-0 home defeat by Drighlington's second string who gained immediate revenge after the previous weeks win for Adam Bose's side. This puts them 6 points off the promotion places in 4th, with 5 league matches remaining.
