Widnes recorded their first win of the season with a hard fought victory against a big and well drilled Leigh side on Sunday.
Widnes started unusually well, camped on the Leigh line for the first 10 minutes. Hooker and MOM Edward Jones coming close to scoring in the corner. The Leigh defence was well organised and kept the Wids at bay. Once the initial storm was weathered Leigh settled and scored a good breakaway try under the posts, converted giving them a 7-0 lead.
Widnes scrum half Jonny Cooke picked up from open play and scooted under the posts, converted by Gareth Whitfield. Leigh scored next, from a well set ruck 10 yards from the Wids line, not converted.
Jack May, making a welcome return from injury, dotted down out wide after a break from the half way line. Not converted. 12 all and game on.
Josh Breeden broke through the Leigh line to give Widnes the lead, with Gareth converting.
The last 5 minutes saw Leigh pressurising the Wids line, but the lads held firm giving them the result at the final whistle.

Good team play throughout the match from both sides in an evenly matched affair. The two sides will meet again in the Lancashire Cup pool stages.
