Widnes 3rds were forced onto the back foot by a surprisingly strong Crosby St. Mary's 2nd team.
Crosby St. Mary's belied their lowly league position to put a much-changed Widnes 3rd team under tremendous pressure from the start of the match.
Widnes stood firm in the opening exchanges but, despite regular runs by Jon Preston and strong tackling by Chris Rigby and Phil Anders in particular, the hosts took the lead on 30 mins. A further try before half-time saw Widnes turn around 12-0 in arrears.
After 5 mins of the second half, Graham Riley was forced to limp off, the 3rd of Widnes' enforced changes. Dave Glynn moved to scrum half and Widnes continued to defend their line until eventually Crosby broke through to score two more tries.
Late breaks by Lee Holland and Tom Randle were stopped by desperate defence by the home side but Widnes can take credit for a determined performance.
