Manager offers his verdict on Widnes' 5-1 win at AFC Blackpool

Joey Dunn spoke of his pride after delivering Widnes the Hallmark Security League First Division title following a 5-1 win at AFC Blackpool.

It has been a remarkable season for Dunn and his side. Since taking charge in October, Widnes have only lost twice in the league and Tuesday's emphatic win on the Fylde Coast - coupled with Charnock Richard failing to win at City of Liverpool - meant that Widnes' points tally of 93 could not be surpassed.

"It's a fantastic feeling. Absolutely fantastic," Dunn said.

"After Saturday, we put ourselves in the pole position and I always felt that something was going to give in the other game tonight, but we needed to come here and do our own job.

"The feeling of winning it is unbelievable! The lads have been brilliant and I don't think anyone can argue against them deserving to win it.

"We've only dropped 16 points from 31 games and we've won the last 13 consecutive games - we've been the best team.

"We wanted to prove that we're the best so to do so is a brilliant feeling.

"When we came to the club, we wanted to be competitive and we recognised that there were three promotion places on offer.

"We knew the quality the team already had and we knew what we needed to add to it.

"We've been very clear in terms of what we wanted to do. I think that we've done it the right way - by playing football. We're not an ugly, long-ball side as described by others which only serves as motivation.

"We've represented the club fantastically well and I'm proud to be manager of Widnes and I'm sure that everyone associated with the club is very proud tonight."

George Lomax netted a first-half hat-trick with skipper Kev Pollard and Chris Lomax adding further strikes as Widnes chalked up a 13th consecutive league win.

Dunn praised his players for doing their job and focusing on their task at-hand.

He said: "We said to the lads before the game that there is no point in thinking about anyone else. We had to do our own job.

"The way we went about tonight shows that. We were 4-0 up at half-time and it should have been more. We had the appetite and tonight's win is just as important as the 1-0 wins over Silsden and Bacup.

"We never really thought about what was going on elsewhere despite mutterings from the crowd.

"The lads approached the game in the right way and put in another great performance."

Despite the title already being sewn up, Dunn wants his side to continue their superb run of form and record a 14th consecutive league victory in their final game of the season at home to Daisy Hill on Saturday.

"We want to make sure that we win on Saturday, because 14 straight wins is a remarkable achievement," Dunn said.

"That's one third of the season and that gives us 2.5 points per game since I took over, which is a magnificent record.

"We want to make sure that we finish the job off properly because we're immensely proud of what we've accomplished."
