Please come and support this unique occasion.

A WORLD War One Commemoration match is set to take place at Wigan RUFC’s Douglas Valley ground on Saturday 11th April, kick off 3pm.
The match is between Wigan and Preston Grasshoppers second teams, with the Wigan squad wearing the shirts in our picture, produced by Wigan sportswear manufacturer ADM. The shirts will have the names of fallen WW1 soldiers printed on their backs. Wigan spokesman Adrian Goulding told the Courier: “We are looking for names of soldiers from Wigan, if they played any sports locally, and we would like to speak with anyone who may want to sponsor a shirt at £50 each.”

The two clubs, old rivals in rugby union, will exchange club plaques before kick off, there will be a minute’s silence, and a piper has been recruited to play before the game. The club bar will be open for refreshments as normal during the afternoon, and into the evening.

Adrian added: “Everyone is welcome to attend and pay their respects to the brave lads of Wigan and Preston who sacrificed their lives for the cause of freedom between 1914 and 1918.
“ Shirt number 14 will be dedicated to "The Unknown Warrior".
The club website will give more information as the date for the game gets nearer, and Adrian Goulding can be contacted on afgoulding@googlemail.com.
