Wigan face Aspull in their first competitive game of the new season in the Lancashire Plate competition. Despite playing in different leagues this year, both sides will see this keenly contested matchup as a yardstick with which to measure against their aims for the coming season.

Wigan have faced tough opponents in their two pre-season outings so far, having been narrowly beaten away to Orrell and Littleborough. However, Head coach, Martin Scott was keen to accentuate the positives. “These games have given us the chance to work on our confidence against very competitive sides. We still need to get to the edge and get lower in the tackle and hit with more aggression but the signs are there. The attitude from the whole squad has been A1 and when we got the execution right we either went in for the score or made lots of yards. I’m pleased with the progress we are making but there is still lots of work to be done.”

Aspull have gone to great lengths to make the whole day an enjoyable one, with the promise of an ‘aussie outback bbq’, a bouncy castle, an ice cream van, live music from Tom Byrom and most importantly an outdoor bottle bar.

Wigan’s Squad:- Foster, Gregory, Hunter, Wilson, Williams, Afu, Beever, Wallace. Higham, Gee, B Makinson, Prior, Matthews, Bristow, S Makinson. Replacements: Blan, Livesey, Winrow, Biutanaseva, Hampson

The game kicks off this Saturday, 25th August at 3pm at Aspull’s Woodshaw Park ground.
