We played Orrell 3 times in close succession at the close of last season, and the standing was Pats 2 wins and 1 draw – we were hoping for more of the same from the season opener especially playing at “our house”!

Orrell opened the scoring, and then it was pretty much end to end stuff for the first two stanzas with some particularly good long range arcing run tries from deep by Danny and Kyle, and some good penetrating runs from James – and similarly effective replies from Orrell. Going into the final stanza it was Pats 4 (Danny 3 tries & Kyle 1 try) – Orrell 4

The final stanza saw Orrell score 3 more tries without answer from Pats - we were very close on three or four occasions, and had we been successful it could have been a very different result.

Whilst the Orrell defensive line seemed vulnerable to attacks deep from within Pats half from our speed merchants, when you got Orrell on their try-line they were well drilled and solid, and we just couldn’t get through, despite considerable efforts from Christian, George, Bradley, Thomas and Bentley - In the end Orrell’s better try line defence was the difference.

Final score was Pat's U7's 4 - Orrell St James u7's 7.

Man of the Match went to Danny for his long range strikes, and the Coaches Award went to Thomas for his 14 tackles, a number of which were last man try savers, and a special mention for Bentley for carrying on regardless, despite being absolutely blue with the cold.

As we struggled to break down the Orrell defence on their line when it mattered, rumour has it that the tackle pads will be making an appearance at the next training session, and the lads will be piling in until the bags split open.

Overall a good hit up, despite the result, and there was a lot of commitment shown today by all of the team – and from the parents and coaching staff can we say a big WELL DONE to the guys, some things need a little bit of work, but it’s looking good so far.

Congratulations to Orrell on their win and thanks for giving us a great first game of the season.....we owe you one.
