The game was played in 4x 20 minute sessions with rolling subs.
Both sides had squads of 22 and in perfect conditions spectators were well entertained as both sides produced a pacy, committed high scoring game.
Wigton took the score line 39 - 32 and after dominating the early exchanges they rattled up a 20 point lead. But Gateshead dominated the final session scoring 2 converted tries in the process.
Wigton scored 7 tries through Scott Smith 2, Gregg Smith, Richard Moffatt, Ferguson Ledingham, Steve Harris and Stuart Creighton. Cory Bouch converted 2.
There were 1st XV debuts for 5 players, front rowers Ralph Chamberlain and Kev Robinson; lock Fian Clark and flankers Peter Thorneycroft and Chris Owen .
It was also pleasing to see Colin Sessford back on the park after missing 10 months following knee surgery.
Saturday 30th August is a cup weekend - the 1st XV have a bye and the Wanderers XV have an away draw at Creighton RUFC Kick off 3.00pm.
