Time for the Wizards to get in shape....

Whichever shape they chose to get in is entirely up to them but they do have a game coming up in October so here's a bit of advanced notice...

Yes the Mighty Wigton Wizards resume service on Sunday 19th October with an away fixture against Tynedale where last season they managed a 22-22 draw! In fact the Wizards were in the lead at the break and were looking good - but the hosts produced a bottle of port instead of half time oranges - a shrewd move that seemed to affect the Wizards ability to run in a straight line!

The Wizards managed to head out on a tour at the end of last season and Whitley Bay didn't know what hit it! Although Steven Tweddle is still in rehab, it is hoped that most people have now recovered and will be available to play a part in the Tynedale fixture - it was in May after all!

So we shall see....is Doddy really back? Has Gary Davenport been scooped up off Thursby village green yet? And has anyone seen the amazing dancing Wizard recently?

Josh Poole has recently become a father - congrats JP - although it was noted on tour that he had lost a yard or several of pace - hopefully he's been working on this during his paternity leave! Talking of pace, you should see the speed at which Richard Benson and Jasper Kirkman come back with excuses why they won't be able to play! Usain Bolt has nothing on the speed of their rugby avoidance!

Rumour has it David Leeson's shift pattern works in with the date and he will be raring to put in another quality 5 minutes of rugby however Tiff's move into management sees him staying at home to work on second team line out calls. Even captain Bense isn't sure he can play on this occasion - although that's probably a bonus as he usually prefers to play for the opposition.

I hear that last years Wizards player of the year, Nemo Thompson is raring to get back on the turf but will we see the previous years player of the year - and Nemo's name sake - David Thompson? Would be good to have him back in the group - even if he is determined to play scrum half! Barrie Henderson will no doubt be reclaiming his regular position there however and with Mark Grainger also sniffing around the number 9 shirt, it looks like his Barrie's place is pretty secure.

It is hoped there will continue to be a first XV influence in the squad and Head Coach Malcom Brown has already bagged the Number 8 shirt (Lance Hetherington is unavailable Malc so there'll be no fallout there)! We'll also find out if Jav Waning and Russ Mclean can still complete 160 minutes of rugby in a weekend (some say they don't complete that in a season)! And will we see coach David Warwick pull on a jersey this time around? Come and show us how to win a game Waz!

A few more availability questions remain - did Stuart hook really bin his boots after the Fire Service match? And will we be seeing Gareth Morton's new boots again after last seasons man of the match performance vs Silloth? Staying with the boots theme, will anyone lend Mark Sliv Rear some for his first veterans away match? Sliv is technically not a veteran but like Tom Chamberlain he will fit in well!

The club has a sizeable injury list already and Andrew Stevens will miss out on this occasion but hopefully Tane Manihera will pass a fitness test. Rumour is afoot that we may have reinforcements from Silloth coming along - Denzil is hoping for swap and hopefully Lama and Fish will be able to join him. And what about speedy back Barry Sloan? Last seen flying down the wing in a desperate attempt to avoid any physical contact! (Only joking Baz!)

The backs could actually hold the key and if we can get Barry Watson, Lee Richardson, Kev Wall and Al Miller on the bus we'll certainly be in with a shout. Rumour has it even Aladair Guthrie has been seen in the gym recently.....getting in shape for something Guth? #veteransrugby! No doubt Malcolm Jennings will be keeping a close eye on the weather forecast - and so will Stuart Ward but only for his wedding the following week. So no, he's not allowed to play in this match!

Contact will be made with regular players in the week running up to the match but if anyone else out there wants to join in then they are more than welcome. The Wizards are a social team that play social rugby and have a few beers afterwards - if you think you would enjoy an afternoon out then get in touch.

The bus will be leaving around midday and returning for 9ish in the evening with a few pub visits planned in Corbridge after the match. Come along for a good day out!
