Matt Dorgan was first to show for the visitors when his quick ball down the right flank forced a third minute corner. Dorgan took but could only watch on as the keeper cleared comfortably. Jamel Fuller was then next to threaten for The Lockmen when he intercepted a pass on the edge of his own box and forged forward to the edge of the opposition penalty area where a well-timed tackle conceded a fifth minute throw-in. The Students then had a spell of pressure, firstly when a fine move down the left by Uni's number 8 from half-way set up the centre-forward, but his effort was straight at Jamie Evans. However, on seven minutes they broke the deadlock when another ball down the right saw the ball squared in for the unmarked number 9 to sweep home the opening goal. However The Reds had levelled within a minute. Fuller again burst down the left flank, and his perfectly stood up cross was headed home by Mattie Dorgan. The home side saw an effort fly over on 11 minutes before Danico Johnson saw his efforts win a flag-kick after a good run by Tom Clews two minutes later. Three minutes on and Willenhall had another corner, this time Fuller 's run and attempted cross won the situation. As play constantly switched the home side then went close on 17 minutes, forcing Evans into a fine block before he could only watch the follow-up blaze a trail over the bar. Johnson was rewarded for his persistance on 19 minutes, when, not for the firat time a Willenhall forward harried the defence. This time the young striker chased down a back-pass to the keeper, toed the ball past the onrushing keeper before rounding him and rolling home from an acute angle for a well deserved goal. In the next attack Willenhall were denied a blatant penalty by a late tackle from behind on Johnson. The Uni had narrow shots wide on 25 and 27 minutes before an impressive Dorgan chased down and won a corner, which saw the resultant flag-kick deflected wide for another attempt. The second corner brought a third after a goalmouth scramble was eventually cleared. On 31 minutes a lovely weighted pass played in Kyle Parchment but he blazed just wide. A minute later and it was squared again when Tom Clews gave away the ball and the number 7 broke clear to level. Loughborough then had a free-kick on the edge of the box which as curled around the wall but well stopped by Evans.

After a raft of half-time substitutions, a quiet opening was broken When replacement keeper Tom Wright saved a weak effort with his feet on 56 minutes, barely two minutes after his introduction. The Uni forced a corner soon after before Johnson did likewise at the other end, neither side threatening the respective keepers. On 62 minutes Andre Calder powered a header inches over from another corner before Johnson produced an unbelievable piece of skill to turn two covering defenders inside out before racing between them, only for his strike to be blocked for a fruitless 63rd minute corner. Calder was then in action at the other end, producing a goal-saving tackle three minutes later. Both sides were taking it in turns to break and shoot, mostly way off target as the efforts appeared more likely to harm overhead planes than either set of goals. Wright did well to deny the number 7 before a shot in the next attack by the number 9 flew just wide.on 75 minutes. Wright made an excellent save four minutes from the end as the lower ranked visitors held out under a barrage of late pressure.
